‘Squid Game’ Creator Discusses American Spin-Off And An Alternative Fate To A Major Character

Netflix’s global phenomenon Squid Gamewhich concluded its third and final season back in June 27, gets major announcement by the series creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk (The Fortress, Silenced). According to Comicbook, the original ending showcased the sacrifice of Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae (The Acolyte, Hunt) in order, to protect the baby. We then cut towards the Frontman, played by Lee Byung-hun (K-Pop Demon Hunters, Red 2) visiting, his daughter and giving the rest of his belongings to her.

According to Comicbook, the ending also included a little hint at the upcoming spin-off series by having a Hollywood cameo by none other than Cate Blanchett (How to Train Your Dragon, Thor Ragnarok) , whose job seems to be the Recruiter as she is seen playing ddakji with a random civilian.

Dong-hyuk foretold in an interview with Comicbook about an alternative ending and states,”I don’t know if I can call it an original ending, but in the beginning I had a vague idea about how I would end the story. And back then, it was having Gi-hun end the game, in one way or another, and leave alive and go see his daughter in America. So originally, I thought the person who witnesses the American recruiter woman would be Gi-hun. But as I began writing the story, and as I began to think more and more about, “What do I want to deliver with the ending of this story?”

According to Comicbook, the creator goes on to explain that the open ending was’t originally supposed to directly lead into a new series and states.”I didn’t end it on that note in order to deliberately leave room for further stories to happen. Gi-hun and Front Man, through these characters, the Games in Korea have ended.”

According to Comicbook, the alternative ending could depict different path for Gi-hun, leading him to get out alive, while accomplishing his mission of dismantling the games for good. While waiting on further news on the acclaimed alternative ending, all three seasons of Squid Game are available to stream on Netflix.
