According to Deadline, Amazon Studios has scrapped plans for the Silk: Spider Society series, which was originally greenlighted in late 2022. The series has been in the works for five years and was going to focus on Cindy Moon, Korean-American superhero, and follow a similar premise to Spider-Man. This news follows the announcement about the upcoming Noir series, starring Nicholas Cage (Ghost Rider), which recently received a greenlight. There will be other series coming such as Daredevil: Born Again and Agatha All Along.
According to Deadline, Lauren Moon (Dash & Lily) was commissioned by STP to write an adaptation of the comic. A year later, Amazon and Sony TV had a conservation on the lineup of Marvel series, which was to be led by Silk, and in 2021, Amazon made a deal with Watchman’s Tom Spezialy (Ash vs. Evil Dead) to serve as the series showrunner. Amazon delayed the opening of the writer’s room for Silk due to the strike from last fall.
The series was unveiled in 2022, and Kang was hired as the series writer, executive producer, and showrunner, alongside Into the Spider-Verse pair Phil Lord (The Lego Movie) and Chris Miller (Clone High). The plan involved a premiere on the MGM+ linear channel in the US, followed by a global rollout on Prime Video. For various reason, previous superhero installment with female leading roles are having a rough time finding footing, such as Madame Web and Disney’s The Marvels, which carried over to genre TV, such as Prime Video not continuing with the sci-fi series, The Peripheral .
According to Deadline, Kang’s latest pitch was well-received, but due to resources and expenses, the studio has decided to move forward with Noir. Whether Silk finds its web on another streaming service or remains on the shelf, one thing’s for certain: the Marvel franchise is always evolving.
