Nickelodeon has announced the premiere date for its upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants holiday special, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Plankton.” According to Variety, the special follows SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs, and an unexpected group of friends as they attempt to save Christmas.
The hour-long animated special will debut on November 27 at 5 p.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon and stream the same day on Paramount+. Their holiday plans are threatened when Plankton takes control of the North Pole, forcing the characters to work together.
The Variety article notes that the special features the show’s familiar voice cast, including Tom Kenny (Adventure Time, Rocko’s Modern Life), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star Show, Coach), and Clancy Brown (The Penguin, The Shawshank Redemption). Rodger Bumpass (Invader Zim, The Little Mermaid), Mr. Lawrence (Rocko’s Modern Life, Camp Lazlo), Jill Talley (The Boondocks, The Loud House) and Carolyn Lawrence (Jimmy Neutron, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius) also return.
Joining the cast is Lewis Black (Inside Out, The Daily Show), who will guest star as Santa Claus. Nickelodeon has also released a trailer previewing the upcoming Christmas adventure.
Following the special, Nickelodeon will premiere a new episode of The Patrick Star Show at 6 p.m. ET/PT. Titled “Snowbound! A Star Family Christmas,” the episode follows Patrick and his family as they share holiday stories while snowed in at home.
Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants originally premiered in 1999 and has since become one of Paramount’s largest entertainment franchises. The series has expanded beyond television into films, video games, merchandise, and a Broadway musical.
The franchise has reached audiences in more than 180 countries and has been translated into over 30 languages. Recent projects include The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show, alongside films centered on Sandy Cheeks and Plankton.
“Merry Christmas, Mr. Plankton” continues the franchise’s holiday programming with another adventure featuring Bikini Bottom’s familiar characters. Both the special and the new Patrick Star Show episode will premiere on November 27.
