With only four episodes so far in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, we have seen so much come into play. From Daredevil fighting the ATVF to Kingpin mastering the political system to his own benefits. In this episode we are given a return to Daredevil’s roots where we see him go to church once more. Spoiler warning for anyone who has not caught up with the series so far.
In the fourth episode we pick up where we left off, Daredevil had freed the civilians that were being held captive in Red Hook. Matt doesn’t realize that he is slowly becoming a symbol for New York by doing this. Bullseye is free and killing many of Kingpin’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force and is later revealed that he trying to enact his one good deed, which is to kill Wilson Fisk. Wilson Fisk partakes in a charity boxing match which was actually a trap made to lure in Bullseye and possibly Daredevil as well. The trap works, however Vanessa ends up dying after Bullseye throws a miniature statue of Wilson at him, only for him to swat the figurine and the debris ends up killing her.
In the middle of the episode where Daredevil is looking for Bullseye, fans will notice Daredevil entering a church but not just any church it is the Clinton Church, the very same church where Matt grew up as an orphan. Fans can appreciate this little easter egg because this church was used in the very first Daredevil series that was streamed on Netflix. This was integral that we return to this church because it serves as a pivotal reminder to Daredevil’s character and the reason why he does what he does. The church serves as a place of moral guidance for Daredevil because it was almost nonexistent in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. Matt went to church not only for guidance but also for atonement for when he goes to far as Daredevil, being a vigilante and taking the law into his own hands, can often mess Matt but also drive him to being a better person. When Foggy died, we see Matt abandon Daredevil all together because he felt unworthy, he failed to save Foggy. However, throughout the season he ends up returning as Daredevil because the city still needs him. The Clinton Church also serves as a place of redemption for Bullseye, because he was ordered by Vanessa to kill Foggy and now he wants to make amends by doing what he believes is the right thing to do, killing Fisk.
The next episode of the series will premiere next Tuesday where we will see what will befall Matt Murdock in a forever changing New York.
