Daredevil: Born Again, has become the mast of blending both the Netflix and Marvel Cinematic Universe together. From having Daredevil reunite with the Punisher to reuniting with Jessica Jones. Now in this latest episode we see another character make their debut. Spoiler warning for anyone who hasn’t seen the second season of the show.
For those who don’t know, the second season of series shows Daredevil slowly building a resistance to stand up against mayor Kingpin. So far the battle has been slow, but the end is rapidly approaching. With the loss of Vanessa, Kingpin has lost his composure and has nothing left to lose. During one of the “Resist Rebel” protests, Officer Powell the chief of the Anti Vigilante Task Force has captured Karen Page and is imprisoned and awaiting her fate at the hands of Kingpin’s “justice.” However, there is a glimmer of hope for Karen, in episode seven Daredevil leans on his former cop Cherry to try and get a man on the inside who can get access to Karen’s cell. The man on the inside turned out to be none other then Officer Brett Mahoney played by Royce Johnson (Chicago P.D., House of Payne).
Where we last saw Mahoney, he was in Netflix’s second season of The Punisher, who at first did not have the best relationship with Frank Castle seeing who Mahoney was a regular police officer and Frank was a hardened vigilante whose method of justice to him is illegal and violent. Yet the two have a mutual sense of respect for one another after Frank saved him from danger in season two. According to Comicbook, the years went on and Mahoney climbed through the ranks of the NYPD, he became a detective and eventually Chief of Detectives. Frank Castle was not his first vigilante encounter for he also aided Jessica Jones in her fight against Kilgrave in season one of her show, Jessica Jones. Mahoney returned in Daredevil: Born Again to grant Karen a minute of freedom so that she could talk to Daredevil about what the next part of the plan is when it comes to taking down Kingpin.
The final episode airs next week, where we will see The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen take the fight to the Kingpin.
