*Spoiler* ‘The Last Of Us’: Showrunner Prepares Audiences For Joel’s Flashback Return

The series showrunners Neil Druckmann (Uncharted: Drake’s Fortuneand Craig Mazin (Scary Movie 3) have released a teaser for the upcoming episode in The Last of Us season two, after the brutal events within the fifth episode. The episode shows Ellie and Dina, played by Isabela Merced (Madam Web, Alien: Romulus), discovering a new airborne type of Cordyceps while on a path to find Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, Last Man Standing). According to Screenrant, the teaser showcases the return of Joel, played by Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, The Wild Robot), within a flashback talking to Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials).

Mazin and Druckmann go on to discuss about the state of the show, with the entire conversation with Screenrant seen below.

“Episode 1, we see this tension between Joel and Ellie,” Druckmann explained to ScreenRant. “You never see them happy like this. And yet here they are.”

Mazin add, “So what happened? What is the story that went down in those five years between ‘swear to me’ and Joel’s death? I guess we’ll have to wait a week and find out. But hey, Pedro Pascal’s back everybody, woo!”

According to Screenrant, the trailer displays the happy moments throughout the duo’s journey which includes exploring iconic landmarks. The episode will delve into the five-year time skip from the events of the previous season, where the duo will encounter happy moments, until Ellie discovers the truth of Joel with the Fireflies, which will test their relationship.

Pascal teased about his character’s return in an interview with Screenrant.

“Something that I guess I do feel like keeping secret is how those things will play and where they will be placed, which I think is still a lovely thing to not know for people that watch the show.”

All current episodes of the second season of The Last of Us, as well as the entire first season, are available to stream on Max with new episodes released every Sunday.
