Prime Video’s Fallout, has made waves when it came to the episode three. The third episode shares some scenes with Maximus played by Aaron Moten (Fallout, Emancipation), and the Brotherhood of Steel and what they have planned for the wasteland. Spoilers ahead for anyone who has not caught up with all of season two.
In third episode we are introduced to a new character by the name of Xander Harkness played by Kumail Nanjiani (Kumail Nanjiani: Night Thoughts, Ella McCay). Xander is a Paladin within the Brotherhood of Steel for the Commonwealth and has come to Maximus and his Brotherhood as a liaison between them both. According to TVLine, Xander showing up to Maximus’ Brotherhood unannounced has been troublesome for them because they cannot start a civil war with him there. Maximus offers the idea to kill Xander but the idea is shot down by Elder Cleric Quintus played by Michael Cristofer (Mr. Robot, Last Supper). If Xander was to be killed it would incite a civil war among the factions within the Brotherhood.
In the show, Xander goes to Maximus and tells him why he is there. Xander tells him that he needs his faction to hand over the cold fusion relic, if they refuse to do so then war will break out destroying the Brotherhood of Steel. One thing that series gets right about the video game is the idea that choices must be made whether they be good or bad. Maximus must choose to either surrender the relic to Xander or refuse. According to TVLine, both Xander and Maximus decide to go on a mission while the clerics argue amongst themselves and while they are exploring the wasteland fighting robots they run into ghoul children and Thaddeus played by Johnny Pemberton (It’s Florida, Man, The Lowdown) Maximus makes the choice of killing Xander to say Thaddeus and the children. With the deed being done the audience is left with a sense of uncertainty as to what will happen next for the Brotherhood of Steel.
During an interview with TVLine, Moten had this to say regarding Maximus’ choice in the third episode, “He’s got the promotion that, at the start of Season 1, he always wanted, but it’s a little bit of ‘careful what you wish for’ for him now,’ adds Moten. ‘It’s maybe the last thing he would wish for. [Executive producer] Jonah [Nolan] and [showrunners] Graham [Wagner] and Geneva [Robertson-Dworet] do this incredible thing when writing the stories where your characters have no choice but to continue, like we all have to as human beings. So they put us into these circumstances where choice is limited in certain times, but you see the characters doing what they can to make sure that they can survive.” We’ll have wait till next week to see what lies in store for Maximus after the decision he has made. All three episodes can be found on Prime Video.
