In the gripping finale of Disney+’s latest animated Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord had the audience in shocked mainly due to the rash decision by Devon, voiced by Gideon Adlon (Solar Opposites, Terminator Zero), and how it will redefine her character and the moral of the story. According to Screenrant, in the beginning of the series, Devon was a padawan survivor of Order 66 alongside her master, Eeko-Dio Daki, voiced by Dennis Haysbert (Wreck-It Ralph, Masters of the Universe: Revelation), who along their journey will encountering the infamous Darth Maul, voiced by Sam Witwer (The Mist, Star Wars Rebel).
It wasn’t until the finale in which Devon witness Daki’s death by the hands of Darth Vader, that broke her into channeling her rage and so was taken by the dark side and ultimately became Maul’s apprentice. Stated by Screenrant, Adlon speak on how the death has changed her character perspective stating,”Grief changes a person. The path you go forward on will always be different because you are different.”
Adlon further explain in detail in an interview with Screenrant about about Devon’s unescapable outcome and what it could me in the long rode, “It’s something that she needs to do, and also I think she doesn’t have anywhere to go. Even though he is who he is, Maul feels like the safest option for her at this point.” The series has done well with have obtained a 98% score on Rotten Tomato and renewed for a second season.
The series finale eschews a neat sense of closure for its characters; instead, it leaves the audience grappling with lingering questions regarding whether Devon’s dramatic actions will yield lasting consequences. Furthermore, the ending shifts the focus toward the uncertain future of the newly formed teacher-and-student duo, leaving their ultimate destination an open mystery.
