The new Star Trek series will take place twenty years after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran for seven seasons from 1987 to 1994. The plot of Star Trek: Picard will follow Jean-Luc Picard into his retirement from Starfleet, only to be drawn back into service, captaining a whole new crew.
Patrick Stewart, who previously played the role of Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, will be reprising his role in this new series. Other cast members from The Next Generation will also be returning to their past roles in the new series, including Jonathan Frakes as Commanders William Riker, and Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi. Also joining the cast will be Isa Briones, Alison Pill, and Santiago Cabrera. Among the writers credited for the upcoming episodes is Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the original Star Trek series from the 1960s as well as The Next Generation.
Following the announcement, many fans of The Next Generation expressed their enthusiasm for the new series.
