On Wednesday, various crew members aboard Netflix’s Space Force took to Instagram to share that production has officially wrapped on the series second season. Fictional scientist Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley, Crazy Rich Asians) was one of the first to post about production coming to an end, saying “honestly had the best time with this incredible family. Absolutely cannot wait for everyone to see it” (Instagram).
The Steve Carrell (The Office, The Big Short)-helmed political satire, that saw General Mark Naird attempt to put boots on the moon, premiered in May 2020. While the comedy received lukewarm critical reception, it proved an overall success for Netflix and earned second season renewal in the fall. According to Comicbook.com, Space Force’s writers’ room had virtually reconvened even prior to the official renewal announcement.
Despite an isolating trek up to Canada during a pandemic, the Space Force team appeared happy to reunite and get to work on season two this past May. “Shooting on location in Vancouver, while at times difficult with being away from friends and family, ended up bringing all of us closer,” actress Diana Silvers (Booksmart, Ma) shared on her Instagram as Space Force concluded production this week. “These folks taught me a lot, and helped me make the most of my time here.”
Yang, Silvers and Tawny Newsome (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Bajillion Dollar Propertie$) all included photos and videos of the cast playing basketball together in their production wrap-up posts. It seems as though basketball became a favorite pastime of the Space Force cast over their summer months in Vancouver. In a separate post a few weeks prior, Newsome had shared a video of her scoring one of her first layups while on the court with Yang, via Instagram. Other favorite activities occupying the Space Force cast during production appeared to be dance videos and phone games such as Heads Up.
“There are so many wonderful things that happened over the last 2.5 months,” Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation, DuckTales) wrote in an Instagram post on Wednesday. “But none will top Oscar nominee John Malkovich attempting to sound like a rooster in a game of Heads up.”
Hopefully the comradery and chemistry shared by the Space Force cast will translate into a stellar second season of the Netflix comedy. With production officially wrapped, fans can expect a timeline and first-look from the series on the horizon. Aside from continued antics from the cast members who posted on social media this week, fans await answers about Lisa Kudrow’s (Friends, The Comeback) Maggie Naird’s criminal history and how the series will handle the passing of legendary actor Fred Willard (Best in Show, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy) in Space Force’s upcoming second season.
