Deadline has reported bad news for South Park fans who may be excited to dive into the new season. Previously reported to become available on July 9th, the new season 27 debut on Comedy Central has been pushed back to July 23rd.
Per Deadline, the issue has arisen from tension and legal threats regarding its streaming rights during the pending merger of Skydance and Paramount Global. South Park Digital Studios is run by Trey Parker (Orgazmo, Team America: World Police) and Matt Stone (South Park, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut), yet it is co-owned by Paramount Global.

Over the politics and antsy to get their work on the new season to their fans, Parker and Stone took to social media to vent their frustrations. In a post on X, the show’s creators stayed in character with a post that read: “This merger is a sh*tshow and is f*cking up South Park. We are at the studio working on new episodes, and we hope the fans get to see them somehow.”
Deadline also reports that the previous deal South Park had with HBO has expired and has yet to be replaced with a new exclusive or non-exclusive deal. Deadline speculates that the show may look to strike up multiple non-exclusive deals as Paramount Global has shown interest in making the show available on their own streaming platform, Paramount+. Their current CEO has even bragged to investors at the recent earnings call that the show will be coming to the streaming platform in July.
According to Deadline, while this is happening, the non-exclusive rights have also been shopped to Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. There has even been a letter sent from Parker and Stone’s attorney to Jeff Shell, who is set to become the new CEO of Paramount Global if the deal is finalized, that alleges interference with the negotiations. The letter allegedly threatens legal action over claims of an attempt to get Warner Bros. Discovery to agree to a smaller deal with shorter terms.
All the behind-the-scenes drama may be more than the show’s creators and fans care to deal with, yet hype about the new season has not been dampened with the trailer for the new season garnering 2.51 million views and the post on X where the show’s creators roasted the delay gaining 7.5 million views and 100 thousand likes. The new trailer can bee seen below. It has a very eerie soundtrack to it and features snippets that allude to plane crashes from bad air traffic support, ketamine references, the statue of liberty being pulled down, Wicked posters, aliens, P. Diddy, what looks like a sentient AI, and even a war with Canada. The new season is expected to be available July 23rd on Comedy Central, pending further delays.
