Sonya Cassidy (Lodge 49) has been cast in the upcoming science fiction Showtime series The Man Who Fell to Earth, as reported by Deadline. She joins the previously cast Chiwitel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Naomi Harris (Moonlight).
The Man Who Fell to Earth will be an adaptation based upon the 1963 novel written by Walter Tevis (The Queen’s Gambit, The Hustler) under the same name. It will also draw inspiration from the 1976 film starring David Bowie (Labyrnth) which was also based upon the novel with the same title. The film has since garnered cult classic status as it stars Bowie as an alien who has fallen down to earth on a mission to save his own planet. It was hailed as a surreal and fantastical experiment that left audiences reeling.
Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek) and Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married) will serve as the series showrunners, writers, and executive producers. Kurtzman is also set to direct numerous episodes. With the updated Showtime series, Ejifor is stepping into Bowie’s shoes and will now portray the alien who’s crashed down onto earth. As he adapts to this new found life, he must confront his past in order to save the future. Harris will co-star as Justin Falls, an engineer and scientist.
Cassidy will be portraying Edie Flood, who according to Deadline, is: “CEO of OriGen Industries, and a woman driven to her protect family’s prominent tech company at any cost.” She joins the previously cast Jimmi Simpsoon (Westworld) who will play CIA Angent Clay. Clarke Peters was also recently announced to be joining the series as Josiah falls, father to Harris’s Justin. A scientist and genius, he forms a relationship with Ejiofor’s alien that helps move forward human evolution.
Cassidy is best known for her work on the critically acclaimed AMC series Lodge 49. Just running for two seasons, she starred as Liz Dudley opposite Wyatt Russell, (Everybody Wants Some!!) who played her stoner brother Dud. She also starred in the 2016 Channel 4 series Humans along with appearing in an episode of the AMC 2020 series Soulmates.
