This summer, a new addition to the Ghostbusters film franchise will be released by Sony Pictures, and to put it lightly, the movie is generating a bit of buzz. The film stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, and it’s a big deal because this revamp of Ghostbusters directed by Paul Feig features an all-female cast of ghostbusters. The trailers for the film have been inundated with both positive and negative response, but nobody can deny that people are talking about it.
Presumably riding the wave of buzz surrounding the movie, which comes out June 6th in theaters, Sony Animation announces that it’s planning for a new Ghostbusters animated series. According to Variety, the series will be called Ghostbusters: Ecto Force. It will be set in the future in the year 2050 and feature new generation of Ghostbusters. The series will be spearheaded by Ivan Reitman, who directed the original 1984 film. The series is planned for a 2018 debut. There are no specific details about the plot of the show, but io9 speculates that the series will continue in the universe of the upcoming Paul Feig film.
This isn’t the first time that the Ghostbusters have hit the small screen. An animated show entitled The Real Ghostbusters aired on ABC from 1986-1991.
Along with the planned Ghostbusters series, Sony Animation has planned a Hotel Transylvania series, which Deadline reports will launch in 2017 and tell the story of Mavis, Dracula’s daughter, and her teenage years with her friends. It will air on Disney Channel. Also planned is an animated spinoff of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which will expand the world featured in the feature films and will air on cartoon network.
