Heated Rivalry has blown up across social media, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon. The series features a decade-spanning relationship and rivalry between two top hockey players. Jesse Kortrum, a former professional hockey player, even credited the show with inspiring him to publicly come out.
SNL rarely misses the opportunity to spoof a show that has created so much traction, and Heated Rivalry was no exception. Hosting for the evening was Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, It), and the writing staff took advantage of his likeness to a well-known magical youth, Harry Potter, although in this version, all the characters are noted to be above 18.
Perhaps taking inspiration from a library’s worth of fan fiction or not wanting to miss the chance to make several wand innuendos, the SNL sketch entitled ‘Heated Wizardry’ features a romance between Ron and Harry. According to Deadline, the duo seems more focused on Quidditch and their budding romance than on defeating Voldemort. Herminone, on the other hand, still has her head in the book, figuring out ways to combat the dark arts while Harry and Ron canoodle under the invisibility cloak. Later that same scene, they ask her, “What’s the spell to make something bigger?. Magic is used several times to aid Harry and Ron’s romance, including Expelliarmus to disrobe Ron.
Deadline has reported thatIn some phony reviews for the sketch, J.K. Rowling is quoted as saying, “I am not a part of this”. Rowling has been subject to controversy due to her stance on trans rights.
According to Deadline, Jason Momoa also makes a surprise cameo in the sketch as Hagrid. He predicts Harry’s sexuality with a play on the line from the first movie, “You’re a wizard, Harry.” In ‘Heated Wizardry’, the line is altered to “You’re a homo, Harry”. Momoa’s Hagrid is then affectionately called a “queen” by Harry.
