‘Smiling Friends’ Plans Its Own Anime Adaptation

The co-creators of ‘Smiling Friends’ Michael Cusack (YOLO) and Zach Hadel (Sleepycast) plan to release an anime adaptation of Smiling Friends. According to Comicbook.com, plans for a Smiling Friends anime adaptation were confirmed at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

When asked about Smiling Friends receiving its anime adaptation, Cusack confirmed plans to add the characters into the anime world.

“We’ve talked about that. We like the idea of that, we’ll see if it will happen. We like anime and we like Japan culture,” Cusack said, according to Comicbook.

Hadel also gave his perspective regarding plans for a Smiling Friends anime.

“I don’t know if it will necessarily be ‘Smiling Friends the Anime’ but we’ve talked about doing that as a style. It would be something that we would need to nail, it couldn’t be lame or a 90s version of the show. It would have to be done right, and not cringey. It would be horrible, don’t watch it,” Hadel said at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.

In addition to the anime adaptation, the creators of Smiling Friends entertained the idea of a spin-off show focused on Mr. Frog, one of their minor but fan-favorite characters.

“I feel like the Mr Frog spinoff would be the most obvious. And that’s so easy because it’s just like the Mr Frog eats the bug and we could do that for 100 seasons. Probably make more money than we do now with Smiling Friends,” Cusack said at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.

The synopsis of Smiling Friends is as follows:

“In a colorful yet bizarre world, Pim and Charlie go on adventures working for the Smiling Friends Corporation, a business that specializes in helping people with their daily troubles. The show feels like friends trying to make each other laugh. There are jokes constantly being thrown at you so if one doesn’t completely land, you are already off to the next.”

The television programming block Adult Swim did renew Smiling Friends for a third season, however, there has yet to be any word as to when the season will premiere. As for the first two seasons of Smiling Friends, all episodes can be found on Max.
