Deadline writes that Sky’s limited series Amadeus finally has a release date finally has a U.S. release date. It will premiere on Starz on May 8, after the rights were bought by Starz in January.
According to Deadline, the show was based on a 1979 award-winning play written by Peter Shaffer (Equus, Black Comedy), and translated by Joe Barton (My Days of Mercy, The Ritual). It portrays Will Sharpe (The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, The White Lotus) as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as well as Paul Bethany (A Beautiful Mind, A Knight’s Tale) as Salieri, and Gabrielle Creevy (In My Skin, Black Doves) plays Mozart’s faithful wife, Constanze Weber.
Deadline writes that the five-part series starts with Mozart in 18th Century Vienna, no longer being a musical prodigy, but still creatively potent. He meets his future wife, Constanze, and his gracious composer Salieri. As Mozart’s gift flourishes despite his demons and questionable reputation, Salieri is tortured by his immense jealousy. This partnership descends into decades of obsessions with Salieri forever linked to Mozart’s legacy after death.
Deadline notes that Amadeus also stars Rory Kinnear (Bank of Dave 2: The Loan Ranger, The Diplomat) playing Emperor Joseph, Lucy Cohu (Erotic Adventures of Anais Nin, Cape Wrath) as Cecilia Weber, Jonathan Aris (Red Eye, The Game) as Leopold Mozart, Ényì Okoronkwo (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Late) playing Da Ponte, Jessica Alexander (Primate, A Banquet) as Katerina, Hugh Sachs (Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) as Von Strack, Paul Bazely (Such Brave Girls, Funboys) as Von Swieten, Rupert Vansittart (Heartbeat, Game of Thrones) playing Rosenberg, Anastasia Martin (In From The Cold, Wolves of War) as Aloysia Weber, Nancy Farino (Scandal, Midnight Ride) playing Josepha Weber, Olivia-Mai Barrett (Savage Flowers, Alex & Co.) as Sophie Weber, Viola Prettejohn (The Nevers, The Crown) as Princess Elizabeth, and Jyuddah Jaymes (Sanditon, Clique) as Franz Süssmayr.
Amadeus is filmed by Two Cities Television (part of STV Studios) with Sky Studios. The series is produced by John Griffin (Sleep Stalker, Author Anonymous) and Rupert Lord (Our House: A Musical Love Story, Amadeus). Megan Spanjian (Under Salt Marsh, Atomic) and Paul Gilbert (Up On You, To Be with You) serve as producers for Sky, and Michael Jackson (Birdland, One on Two) and Stephen Wright (When the Leave Blow Away, One Solider) serve as producers for Two Cities Television.
