According to the Hollywood Reporter, Showtime has decided to cancel the American crime drama series, City on a Hill, after just three seasons. The show premiered back in June of 2019 to generally favorable reviews, though it would seem that the series’ initial praise was not enough to keep it afloat in the eyes of Showtime executives.
Starring such talents as Kevin Bacon (Footloose, You Should Have Left) and Aldis Hodge (Black Adam, One Night in Miami), City on a Hill tells the story of the unorthodox duo formed between seasoned FBI Agent Jackie Rohr (Bacon) and up-and-coming city prosecutor Decourcy Ward (Hodge), who band together to clean up the corruption and violence plaguing the streets of early 1990’s Boston. Hodge’s work on the series nearly landed him a Satellite award for Best Actor in Television Series Drama earlier this year, though he was ultimately beat out by Omar Sy of Netflix’s Lupin.
As written by the Hollywood Reporter, the decision to cancel City on a Hill was made quietly sometime earlier this month during the executive shake-up involving the departure of veteran Showtime Networks head David Nevins from parent company Paramount Global and the arrival of his subsequent replacement: Chris McCarthy, head of Paramount Media Networks. The show concluded its third and final season with an eight-episode run back in September.
This is certainly a shocking decision from Showtime considering the significant star power behind the series, which included the likes of: Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting, Gone Girl), Matt Damon (The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Martian), and Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Wag the Dog) as executive producers with the Emmy-winning Tom Fontana (Oz, St. Elsewhere) as showrunner.
However, a silver lining exists in Aldis Hodge, who is set to star in the recently greenlit Cross for Amazon Prime Video, based on the hit book series by famed mystery/ thriller author James Patterson. Check out our other article on Hodge’s new series: here.
