Showtime Takes Over Country Music Drama ‘George & Tammy’

According to Deadline, Showtime will be picking up the country music drama limited series and MTV Entertainment Studios/ 101 Studious original, George & Tammy. Showtime’s decision to carry on with George & Tammy, a joint production between Spectrum Originals and Paramount Network, comes after the massive corporate shakeup from Charter Communications, which chose to shut down its Spectrum Originals division back in August amid rising production costs.

The story of George & Tammy is a dramatic re-telling of the lives of country music stars George Jones, played by Michael Shannon (Knives Out, Bullet Train), and Tammy Wynette (often dubbed “The First Lady of Country Music”), played by Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Interstellar), which follows the ups and downs of their tumultuous musical and romantic partnership. The six-part limited series is created by Abe Sylvia (The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Pearl Harbor) with John Hillcoat (The Road, Triple 9) serving as director and produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios, Freckle Films, Mad Chance, Brolin Productions, Aunt Sylvia’s Morning Picture Co. and Blank Films Inc.

As written by Deadline, George & Tammy was initially set to premiere on Spectrum for a nine-month run as one of its exclusive original series before moving on to Paramount Network and Paramount+, but was abandoned by Charter and Spectrum alongside countless other shows. The decision to move the series over to Showtime comes from newly appointed executive Chris McCarthy, who took over as head of Showtime earlier this season following the exit of veteran chief David Nevins.

The series will premiere on Sunday, December 4, and will debut simultaneously on both Showtime and Paramount Network behind the critically-acclaimed Western drama, Yellowstone. The rest of the show will air on Showtime, but will have new episodes available on both streaming and on-demand services, including Showtime and Paramount+.
