Showtime Renews ‘The Affair’ for a Fourth Season

Just because it’s the early days of the new year doesn’t mean that Showtime is wasting any time on announcing the fate of one of its popular shows. According to a press release, the cable network has renewed The Affair for its fourth season ahead of its season three finale that airs on Sunday, Jan. 29.

The announcement was made on Jan. 9 at the Showtime panel for the 2017 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour by David Nevins, the president and CEO of Showtime.

This season picked up three years after Noah (Dominic West) confessed to murdering Scott Lockhart (Colin Donnell), one of Cole’s (Joshua Jackson) brothers. Noah tries to pick up the pieces of his life but is still haunted by his past. Meanwhile, Alison (Ruth Wilson) has been raising her daughter, Joanie, alongside Cole and Luisa (Catalino Sardino Moreno), Cole’s new wife, as Cole and Luisa try to build their own life together. Meanwhile, Helen (Maura Tierney) is attempting to move on with new boyfriend Vik (Omar Metwally) but still feels a sense of guilt and has to deal with problems in her children’s lives.

This season also added a fifth perspective of Juliette Le Gall (Irene Jacob), a love interest for Noah who is also running from her own secrets.

Jennifer Esposito and Brendan Fraser also guest starred in the third season.

Throughout the show’s run on Showtime, it’s been critically praised and has various awards, including three Golden Globes (one for West, one for Tierney and one for the show overall). The split perspectives of the show’s narrative structure has also been praised, as each season has added on different perspectives of how an affair can tear apart families.

The season three finale of The Affair airs Sunday, Jan. 29 at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
