The Showtime reboot television series of the 1980 film American Gigolo has announced a new addition to its cast in Gretchen Mol (Yellowstone, Boardwalk Empire), according to Deadline. Mol joins the cast opposite Jon Bernthal (Wind River, The Walking Dead) in the upcoming series. The film’s reboot television series was first announced back in 2014 but has stalled in the pre-production process.
The 1980 film centered around Julian Kaye who works as a male escort in California before encountering and developing a relationship with a senator’s wife Michelle. Simultaneously, Kaye is also linked to being a key suspect for a murder, providing further complications to his life. In the original film, Richard Gere (Primal Fear, Chicago) starred as Kaye, and Michelle was portrayed by Lauren Hutton (The Gambler, Nip/Tuck).
For the television version of American Gigolo, Bernthal will portray Kaye eighteen years following his arrest as he is reintroduced back into society. He will attempt to uncover secrets that lead to being falsely implicated in the murder that sent him to prison while also navigating Los Angeles for Michelle, portrayed by Mol.
Currently, the Showtime series will be supervised by Neil Labute (Billions, Hell on Wheels) by way of writing and David Hollander (Ray Donovan, The Cleaner) as an executive producer. Hollander is joined in this role by KristieAnne Reed (Lucifer, Bad Boys II), Jonathan Littman (Lucifer, L.A.’s Finest), and Jerry Bruckheimer (The Rock, Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop). Bernthal is also set to produce for the series in addition to starring in it.
