The network Showtime recently announced that actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Kate, Birds of Prey) has joined the cast of their new show. According to Deadline, Winstead will star in A Gentleman in Moscow alongside Emmy winner Ewan McGregor (Star Wars, Doctor Sleep). The show will premiere on Showtime in the United States and will be available worldwide through Paramount+.
According to Deadline, the limited series is based on the bestselling novel by Amor Towles (Rules of Civility, The Lincoln Highway). The story is about Count Alexander Rostov, played by McGregor, who finds himself on the wrong side of history in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. Instead of being executed, Rostov is banished by the Soviet tribunal to the attic room in the luxurious Hotel Metropol, with a threat of death hanging over his head if he ever steps outside again. He spends the next years watching Russian history happen outside the hotel. His extra free time leads him to discover the extensive world of emotional discovery. He begins building a new life inside Hotel Metropol, where he finds the true value of friendship, family, and love.
Winstead has been cast as Anna Urbanova who is described as a glamorous, independent, and self-made film actress at the height of her popularity. She will use her wit and beauty to dazzle the Count. Anna is also described as enigmatic and someone who likes to keep things private. Not to reveal her true self, she plays roles off and on-screen. Rostov and Anna’s chemistry is clear from the moment they meet at the hotel, but is it true love or just another role Anna is playing?
According to Deadline, A Gentleman in Moscow is produced by eOne in association with Paramount. Ben Vanstone (Merlin, All Creatures Great and Small) serves as a writer, showrunner, and executive producer for the show. Other executive producers include Xavier Marchand (The Lodge, Wild Rose), McGregor, Towles, and Sam Miller (I May Destroy You, Elephant Juice), who will also direct.
A Gentleman in Moscow is still in pre-production and no estimated release date has been revealed by Showtime.
