Two days before its fourth season finale, Emmy-winning comedy Hacks has been renewed for a fifth season, via an official press release. The HBO Max original starring Jean Smart (Watchmen, Frasier) and Hannah Einbinder (Strange Planet, How to Be Broke) premiered its latest season on Thursday, May 10. It recently scored the award for Outstanding Comedy Series at last year’s Emmy Awards.
According to the WBD press release, critics are singing praises for the female-led comedy. Salon lists this season as “TV’s best comedy,” while The Boston Globe calls Smart’s portrayal of comedienne Deborah Vance a “hall of fame-level work.” Gold Derby calls season four Einbinder’s “best season” and Collider states she “simply gets better and more confident every season.”
The series follows the odd pairing of a culturally canceled millennial writer (Einbinder) and a has-been veteran female comedian (Smart) both seeking a new act and redemption. While the two are brilliant professionally, their generational gap and social perspectives constantly clash. This season, the two land what they’ve been fighting for: hosting the prime-time late-night show. But the brighter lights may be too much for each to handle without getting burned.
“Like Deborah Vance herself, HACKS only gets bolder, sharper, and more iconic with time,” said President of Universal Television, Erin Underhill via the press release. “We’re beyond thrilled to keep the laughter rolling with Jen, Paul, Lucia, our extraordinary cast and crew, and our partners at Max.”
Head of Max Original Programming, Sarah Aubrey, added, “Yes! More! We congratulate HACKS’ singularly talented cast and crew and our great partners at Universal Television.”
Along with Smart and Einbinder, the cast consists of writer and co-creator Paul W. Downs (The Studio, American Dad), Megan Stalter (ILY, Bye, Problemista), Carl Celmons-Hopkins (Candyman, Chicago Med), Mark Indelicato (With Love, Dead of Summer), and Rose Abdoo (Saved by the Bell, Young Rock).
New faces this season included Julianne Nicholson (Paradise, The Amateur), Michaela Watkins (Heart Eyes, Abbott Elementary), Bresha Webb (Run the World, A Million Little Things), Eric Balfour (The Offer, The Finest), and several more.
The fourth season of Hacks wraps on Thursday, May 29 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT only on HBO Max.
