As the future of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the right to free speech remains uncertain, more people have become vocal in the debate. The latest voice in support of Jimmy Kimmel belongs to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany. According to Yahoo, Maslany took to Instagram, requesting subscribers cancel their subscriptions to the various Disney-owned platforms in protest of the company’s decision to suspend Kimmel on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Maslany posted an image on her IG stories with a simple request: “Cancel your @disneyplus @hulu @espn subscriptions!” The words were fixed to a photo of Maslany wearing the CGI-capture headgear used on the set of the 2022 Marvel series. Her being vocal is surprising, given that she starred in a show produced by the Disney-owned comic studio.
Her post came the same day Disney+ announced season three of Daredevil: Born Again had been renewed for a third season. The series stars Charlie Cox (Treason, Stardust) as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, who had a cameo as Maslany’s love interest in the She-Hulk series.
According to Yahoo, other public figures echoed the call to boycott Disney’s various platforms, including Congressman Adam Kinzinger and actress Amy Landecker (A Serious Man, All Is Bright). Lost creator and DC’s Lanterns showrunner Damon Lindelof vowed not to work with Disney until Kimmel’s suspension was lifted, and former Tonight Show host Jay Leno announced his support for the comedian and host. Kimmel also received public support from both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.
Kimmel was indefinitely suspended for comments made about conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death and the alleged shooter, Tyler Robinson. Kimmel’s words addressing Robinson’s alleged alignment with the Republican Party received condemnation from President Trump, the FCC chairman, Brendan Carr, and even TV networks that largely carry ABC.
Sinclair, which owns a majority of ABC affiliates, stated the suspension did not go far enough. They want Kimmel to apologize to Kirk’s widow and children and make a donation to Turning Point USA, the conservative nonprofit Kirk founded and led.
