According to Deadline, Shannen Doherty has signed on to star in BH90210, Fox’s upcoming six-episode event series. Doherty will join fellow original Beverly Hills, 90210 cast members Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling. Beverly Hills, a pop culture sensation, premiered on October 4, 1990, and became one of Fox’s most popular programs. The show followed a group of friends from high school to college and into early adulthood as they experienced “coming-of-age dramas and rivalries.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Doherty played Brenda Walsh for the first four seasons of Beverly Hills, 90210, leaving the show in 1994, and played in several episodes of The CW’s 90210 sequel in 2008-09. She also played in Charmed, Kevin Smith’s Mallrats and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and James Franco’s film Bukowski. She recently resumed her role from the cult film Heathers in Paramount Network’s series adaptation. Originally, 90210 centered on Walsh and her twin brother Brandon (played by Priestley), and the changes and the culture shock that they faced when they relocated with their parents from Minnesota to Beverly Hills.
The new BH90210 is inspired by cast members’ real lives and relationships. Since going separate ways after the original series ended 19 years ago, Shannen, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori who will play “heightened versions of themselves,” reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to make a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot. But “getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself.” In fact, what will happen when “first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together” as the cast tries to continue from where they left off 19 years ago? Deadline reports.
Because of his commitment to Riverdale, fellow Beverly Hills, 90210 star Luke Perry had not officially signed onto the reboot before he died on March 4, Deadline reports.
BH90210 was ideated by Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini, who worked on the CW’s 90210 reboot and on Spelling’s series So Notorious together with Spelling and Garth. Doherty will executive produce alongside Chris Alberghini, Mike Chessler, Patrick Sean Smith, Gabrielle Carteris, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling and Ian Ziering, Deadline reports.
