Following the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, director Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12, Just Mercy) has signed an overall TV deal with Disney to develop new projects via his Family Owned production company, according to Deadline. The multi-year deal will see Cretton and partner, Asher Goldstein (Buena Vista Social Club: Adios, Angels in Exile) create content for Marvel Studios as well as Hulu’s Onyx Collective across all platforms.
Deadline reports Cretton is currently developing the action-comedy series, American Born Chinese, for Disney+. Based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang (Boxers & Saints, Secret Coders), the adaptation will follow three separate tales of the Chinese experience in America. Near the work’s end, the three fables will intersect. An additional unknown series based within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is also in the works.
“Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective, Cretton said to Deadline. “I can’t wait to explore new stories and build new worlds with this community.”
According to Deadline, the Onyx Collective is an initiative that enlists creators to develop content focused on the narratives of underrepresented communities. The collective has recruited several new creators including Insecure’s Natasha Rothwell and Prentice Penny as well as Ryan Coogler’s (Judas and the Black Messiah) production imprint, Proximity.
“Destin is a powerhouse storyteller with impeccable taste in material,” said Tara Duncan, President of Freeform & Onyx Collective via Deadline. “As we continue to expand our roster, Destin’s unique voice will help usher in an exciting slate of content for our global audience,” Duncan stated.
The announcement also coincides with Marvel officially setting a Shang-Chi sequel in the works with Cretton returning to write and direct, via Deadline.
“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings,” Marvel Studios President and Cheif Creative Officer, Kevin Feige, said via Deadline. “We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”
