Shakira Barrera (Queen Of The South) has agreed to join the cast of the upcoming Disney+ Marvel series Ironheart as a series regular, according to Deadline. The details on Barrera’s character are currently unclear.
Barrera joins a cast that already includes Dominique Thorne (Judas And The Black Messiah), Anthony Ramos (A Star Is Born), Manny Montana (I Hate The Man In My Basement), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Regan Aliyah (BF For Hire), Shea Couleé (Finesse), and Zoe Terakes (Nine Perfect Strangers). Thorne will play the main character, Riri Williams, who Deadline describes as a “genius inventor and creator of the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man.”
The six-episode series is being created by Chinaka Hodge (Snowpiercer), who will also serve as head writer and an executive producer along with Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), Zinzi Coogler (Space Jam: A New Legacy), Sev Ohanian (The Intervention), Kevin Feige (Avengers: Infinity War), Louis D’Esposito (Avengers: Endgame), Victoria Alonso (Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness), Brad Winderbaum (Thor: Love And Thunder), and Zoie Nagelhout (The Falcon And The Winter Soldier). Ryan and Zinzi Coogler will produce the series along with Ohanian for Proximity Media while Feige, D’Esposito, Alonso, Winderbaum, and Nagelhout will produce for Marvel Studios. Sam Bailey (Dear White People) and Angela Barnes (Teenage Bounty Hunters) will direct.
Barrera is known for her appearances in multiple shows including GLOW, It’s Bruno, Animal Kingdom, Shameless, and Queen Of The South. Her film credits include appearances in the short film Huella, The Collection, and The Knocking. Currently, she can be seen in the Freevee series Sprung as a series regular. Barrera has also recently wrapped a recurring role in the OWN drama series All Rise for the show’s third season, according to Deadline.
Ironheart is expected to be released in Fall 2023.
