Sesame Street, the longest running show on the PBS’ network, has reached a deal with Netflix today to stream the beloved series on its platform. Via The Hollywood Reporter, this decision came after Warner Bros. Discovery decided against renewing its output deal for the program. Originally, the television show was planned to air on Max (soon to once again be HBO Max), but was initially pulled back by the company.
The difference between the new deal presented by Netflix, and the previous deal in which HBO Max had planned for the beloved series was a notable one. In Netflix’s deal, according to The Hollywood Reporter, episodes will run on both the PBS’ network, and PBS’ Kids app, providing easy access for all Sesame Street lovers. However, in comparison with Max, the platform often was much slower in debuting new episodes of the show, which is what Netflix wishes to avoid in their upcoming deal. Being PBS’ longest running show, the series has been making episodes for children and families for the last 50 years.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Sesame Workshop CEO Sherri Westin posted in a statement that the private partnership hopes to utilize Netflix to reach today’s younger audiences and families who do not have cable and solely use streaming platforms for television.
“This unique public-private partnership will enable Sesame Workshop to bring our research-based curriculum to young children around the world with Netflix’s global reach, while ensuring children in communities across the U.S. continue to have free access on public television to the Sesame Street they love,” Westin said via The Hollywood Reporter.
The Netflix deal is set to begin later this year beginning with season 56, stating that this coming season will be reimagined. The show will be dropping its magazine style format and gaining a new animated look called Tales from 123. In doing this, Netflix hopes to have longer segments within the episodes. From Netflix’s announcement on The Hollywood Reporter, the new season will be released in three batches.
The Netflix and PBS’ deal has touched Sesame Street fans’ hearts, after the show began seeking a new home after HBO decided against the show’s renewal on the platform due to budget cuts and layoffs earlier this year. This deal has provided the needed financial stability, with Netflix going out of their way to further announce that Sesame Street will be one of their few free options on the platform itself.
