According to Deadline, season two of Shifting Gears on ABC is scheduled to air it’s premiere on October 1, 2025, with special guest stars, Patricia Richardson (Chantilly Bridge, County Line), Richard Karn (Holly Crash, No Such Luck) and Debbe Dunning (The Misery brothers, Dangerous Curves) appearing in the episode with their former Home Improvement costar, Tim Allen (Toy Story 5, Toy Story 4). The trio’s character descriptions are still under wraps, but have been described to help Allen’s character, Matt Parker, unexpectedly.
According to Deadline, Allen plays Matt, the owner of a classic car restoration shop, who rekindles his relationship with his estranged adult daughter, Kat Dennings’s (Friendsgiving, Suburban Gothic) Riley, after she and her kids are forced to move in with him.
Shifting Gears also stars Seann William Scott (Dolly, Bad Man), Daryl Chill Mitchell (10 Things I Hate About You, Inside Man), Maxwell Simkins (The Sleepover, Bizaardvark), and Barrett Margolis, via Deadline. Nancy Traves (Sovereing, Animus) and Jenna Elfman (Dharma & Greg, Keeping The Faith) will return as guest stars during season two.
Allen was the leading man on the show Home Improvement, which ran for eight seasons on ABC from 1991 to 1999, according to Deadline. Allen played the character known as Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, who hosted his own local TV home repair series. He and his on-screen wife, Richardson, portrayed a family with three sons: Zachary Ty Bryan (Pale, Heavy) as Brad, Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Walking Across Egypt, The Lion King Read-Along) as Randy, and Taran Noah Smith (Bold Native, Batman Beyond) as Mark. Karn portrayed the lovable co-host of the show within the show, Tool Time, and Tim’s friend, Al Borland. Dunning played Heidi, Tool Time’s model assistant, from seasons three through eight.
Shifting Gears will not be the first time that the stars of Home Improvement have reunited. According to Deadline, Richardson and Karn appeared alongside Allen on his show Last Man Standing. Karn and Allen also co-hosted two shows on the History Channel and a reality competition series, Assembly Required.
