Mr. & Mrs. Smith has recently been renewed from Amazon Prime Video for a second season. The first season ended with a cliffhanger, in which Donald Glover (Atlanta, Community) and Maya Erskine (Pen 15, Man Seeking Woman) are seen unable to return for more adventures. This left fans confused and eager to know if the series’ main leads would return.
Showrunner Francesca Sloane (Twenty Cigarettes) revealed a teaser about the second season by saying, “Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead.” It seems like the people working on the series probably don’t want to share anything else because more information could lead to potential second-season spoilers. In a recent interview with Variety, Vernon Sanders (The Enemy Within, Harry’s Law), head of TV, and Jennifer Salke (Close up with the Hollywood Reporter), Amazon MGM Studios chief, shared their thoughts on the second season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Comicbook.com reports.
“That’s another example of a very creator-driven project for us,” Salke explained via Comicbook.com.
“Donald came in with Francesca [Sloane], his partner in crime from Atlanta, and they just had a clear vision about wanting this brand of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, to be a way into the examination of a relationship,” Sanders shared via Comicbook.com.
“And a marriage,” Salke continued via Comicbook.com. “Donald talked a lot about his marriage and just the reality of being married. So the whole thing felt so character-driven. It wasn’t coming from just “hot couples who are spies or assassins” that you could easily run into. It was much more of a character-driven relationship study. And the tone of it, it’s just brilliant. And the writing, and [director] Hiro Murai (Station Eleven, Atlanta) did such a great job, and I’m so pleased to see him nominated as well, in addition to the incredible guest cast.”
According to Comicbook.com, when asked if Glover and Ersking would return for the series’s second season, Sanders replied with a teasing sentence, saying, “It’s so funny that you asked that.” Furthermore, Salke added her response to the question, saying, “It seems to be top of mind for everyone.”
“The only thing we can share is that Donald and Maya laid out their vision for Season two, and we’re incredibly excited about it. It’s wildly imaginative. It’s really unpredictable,” Sanders explained via Comicbook.com. “I think it’ll bring audiences everything they want,” Salke concluded.
According to Comicbook.com, Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s season one focuses on two strangers who have just been hired by a mysterious spy agency in Manhattan. This agency is able to offer them a luxurious life of espionage as they become the aliases of the married couple, Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. During their missions, it’s harder to focus on the actual jobs they are assigned to because they begin harboring feelings for each other. And things get very complicated.
According to Comicbook.com, Salke shared that Sloane will return as the showrunner in the season two renewal announcement below.
“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” Salke explained via Comicbook.com. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Glover and Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
Mr. and Mrs. Smith is now available to stream on Prime Video.
