The coming of age comedy series Sex Lives of College Girls is being cancelled after three seasons streaming on Max. The show was co-created by Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project, The office) and managed by showrunner Justin Nobel (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Never Have I Ever). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show was not anticipating calling it quits after this season, and is trying to continue on a different platform.
The third season of the series ended in January. The original cast saw a change after actor Renee Rapp left only two episodes into season three and then the following introduction Gracie Lawrence’s character Kacey.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, With its third season wrapping up smoothly and without major cliffhangers, the left some viewers questioning whether the series was coming to an end. This uncertainty lingered even though the characters were only part way through their sophomore year and the show frequently ranked among Max’s most-watched. However, despite its strong presence on Max’s top 10 list, it never managed to break into Nielsen’s overall top 10 streaming rankings.
Noble spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his take on the show ending.
“No one told us to, like, wrap up the show or anything like that,” he explained.
“I think just me as a creator, I’m losing interest in cliffhangers,” Noble continued. “I think it’s longer than ever between seasons for logistical reasons within the industry, and frankly, I don’t think audiences like cliffhangers the way that they used to. … You have to bring back to the show and comfort that you want. That’s why you return to it. So I’m sort of losing interest in what feels perhaps TV fake to me, in a lot of cliffhangers in comedies.”
He went on to say that he preferred happy endings rather than cliffhangers, but that there are still plots in the show that have yet to play out. Max and Warner Bros. did not comment on this.
He also told The Hollywood Reporter “After seeing our show listed as the most watched or second most watched scripted show on the entire platform for about 70 straight days, this is not the outcome I saw coming.”
He continued, “No matter what happens, The Sex Lives of College Girls has three seasons that showcased incredible performances and told so many important stories while also managing to fill those stories with laughs. In a world of ‘content,’ it’s a show that strived to make sure it entertained — and I feel that we did that. I can’t help but mention that it feels like there are fewer and fewer comedy series every month — and we are living in an era where we need that comedy badly, so I really hope that turns around — but I will always be proud of this show for being the thing that we weren’t seeing enough of: a hard comedy ensemble where ladies get the jokes.”
The show also stars Pauline Chalamet (The King of Staten Island, A Minecraft Movie), Amrit Kaur (The Queen of My Dreams, Little Italy) and Alyah Chanelle Scott (Hell and Harper, Reboot), as roommates at Essex College, a university that was fictionalized for the series.
