Season Three of Neil Gaiman’s ‘American Gods’ Will Premiere on Starz in January, 2021

The third season of American Gods has finally received a premiere date. The philosophical drama filled with gods and demons will return to Starz January 10, 2021 as announced by a promotional photo from the network. The TV series is based on the 2001 novel written by Neil Gaiman (Good Omens), who also serves as an executive producer on the show. In addition to Starz announcing the premiere date, Gaiman also shared a letter describing what’s in store for season three via Deadline

American Gods is a mythical tale about Gods residing in America, with tensions rising between the old gods and new gods. The series stars Ricky Whittle (The 100) as Shadow Moon, Ian McShane (Deadwood) as Mr. Wednesday, Yetide Badaki (This is Us) as Bilquis, and Pablo Schreiber (Orange is the New Black) as Mad Sweeney. There will be several new cast members in the upcoming season as well, including the singer Marilyn Manson (Salem), Lela Loren (Altered Carbon), and Julia Sweeney (Shrill)

Gaiman released a lengthy letter to his Twitter account on Tuesday in anticipation of season three. He wrote about his hopes for the new season, wishing it to be an honest reflection on the state of America. Gaiman also mentioned that the storylines in the upcoming season will be extremely relevant to America’s current political climate.

Via his Twitter, Gaiman began the letter by stating: “When we embarked upon making season 3 of American Gods, we had no idea how timely it would turn out to be. We knew we wanted to return to what people loved and responded to in the book: that it was time for Shadow to go to the little town of Lakeside and try to lose himself in normality. And at the same time, in season 3, we wanted to focus on the characters and their journeys. To show Shadow forging a path guided by the Gods of his ancestors, becoming more himself while deciding who he is and what side he’s on — humanity’s or that of the Gods.”

Also described in his letter posted to Twitter, Gaiman told viewers what to expect from American Gods‘s new batch of episodes: “We also knew that we wanted to continue to root the show in the landscapes of America. To explore what “America” means to people and to talk about immigrants-about the very different people who came to this remarkable land and brought their gods with them. The new gods of phone and app and glitter demand our attention and our love, and the old gods want to mean something again.”

American Gods will premiere on Starz, January 10, 2021, at 8 p.m ET. Read Gaiman’s full letter below, along with the first promotional  photo for season three:
