HBO’s second royal family behind the Targaryens is set to return in exactly two months. CNN reports the premium network announced the season four premiere date for its Emmy-winning drama, Succession. On Sunday, March 26, the corporate, cutthroat calamity of the Roy family will resume from where it left off in 2021’s third season. View the accompanying teaser below.
Creator Jesse Armstrong’s (Fresh Meat, Peep Show) comedic drama series explores the inner workings of the fictional broadcasting conglomerate, Waystar Royco, led by volatile CEO and family patriarch, Logan Roy, played by Brian Cox (X2: X-Men United, Red). Under Logan’s lovingly toxic tutelage are his three children, Kendall, Shiv, and Roman, played by Emmy-winner Jeremy Strong (The Trial of the Chicago 7, Armaggedon Time) and Emmy-nominated Sarah Snook (Winchester, Pieces of a Woman) and Keiran Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Igby Goes Down), respectively. Last season saw the frienemy siblings attempt a grand undertaking – having their father removed from the captain’s chair – as a new buyer, played by Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood, Infinity Pool), sought to purchase the infamous company. However, a deep betrayal depleted the coup and left the three children potentially out of the family business.
With battlelines fully drawn, the teaser illustrates the newly-formed alliances. Matthew Macfadyen’s (Spooks, Operation Mincemeat) Emmy-winning role as Tom, Shiv’s husband of comfort, has shifted to Logan’s side as he was revealed to be the mole in the season three finale. But his deal with the devil, if not played carefully, could leave him just as burned. His reluctant lackey, Nicholas Braun’s (Zola, Cat Person) Cousin Greg, remains somewhere in the middle as he became aware of his bit of leverage over Tom. The lone Roy who seems the least affected by the pending war is Logan’s eldest son, Connor, played as a charming buffoon by Alan Ruck (Spin City, Freaky). He is seen marrying his longtime actress girlfriend Willa, portrayed by Justine Lupe (Luckiest Girl Alive, Mr. Mercedes).
Other cast members set to return include Skarsgard, J. Smith-Cameron (Search Party, Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Zoe Winters (Flatbush Misdemeanors, The Method), David Rasche (Swallow, Blue Eyes), and Peter Friedman (She Said, Single White Female). New to this season’s cast via Variety are Eili Harboe (Thelma, The Wave), Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Black’s Game, Infinite), Annabeth Gish (Midnight Mass, Double Jeopardy), and Adam Godley (The Great, Breaking Bad). One person not in the new trailer is Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man: The Final Chapters, On the Come Up) who joined season three as Kendall’s lawyer Lisa Arthur. She recently discussed whether she would appear in the new season.
The last season of Succession garnered 2022 Primetime Emmy wins for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for Armstrong, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Macfadyen. All three seasons are available to stream on HBO Max.
