According to Deadline, House of The Dragon, the prequel series of Game of Thrones, is being renewed for a fourth season, being announced months before the season three premiere. The release of the highly anticipated fourth season is scheduled for 2028. Casey Bloys, CEO and Chairman of HBO and HBO Max, was the one to announce the news at the premium cabler’s presentation in New York City. HBO has also released new photos for season three. View them below.

Ryan Condal (Colony, Rampage), a showrunner for the series, had mentioned that the series ends after four season. It wasn’t mentioned in the release, though, and it seems up in the air at the moment. Deadline says Condal is still writing season four and the ending date could very well change. A final decision will be made after the season is finished. Bloys also announced a renewal of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for season two. The announcement was made before the debut of the first season on January 18th.
House of The Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood. It’s set a couple hundred years before the series it’s based on and tells the story of House Targaryen. The show’s second season had eight episodes and wrapped filming in August of 2024. The premise of the season picks up after the death of Lucerys Velaryon, who is the son of Rhaenyra. He died at the hands of Aemond Targaryen. According to Deadline, the season also shone a light on the growing tension, as the story shifts focus from the cold war to the Dance of the Dragons.
The cast of the new season includes a few notable actors, including Matt Smith (Doctor Who, Caught Stealing), Emma D’Arcy (Wanderlust, Truth Seekers), Olivia Cooke (The Girlfriend, Ready Player One), Steve Toussaint (Pine Gap, Flight of Fury), Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The King’s Man), Fabien Frankel (Task, The Serpent), Ewan Mitchell (Wuthering Heights, Saltburn), Tom Glynn-Carney (Rialto, Tolkien), and many more.
Both seasons of House of the Dragon are available to stream on HBO Max.
