STARZ’s historical fantasy romance Outlander received an update on its eighth and final season at Comic-Con on Friday, teasing a final — and possibly fatal — chapter for time-crossed lovers Claire and Jamie. Sam Heughman (Jamie Fraser), Sophie Skelton (Brianna Mackenzie), and Richard Rankin (Roger MacKenzie) led a swan song for the adaptation of (author’s) novels, while Jamie Roy, Harriet Slater, Jeremy Irvine, and Hermione Corfield heralded a new era of adventure for fans of the show with information surrounding Blood of My Blood, a previously announced companion series that will focus on the parallel origins of Claire and Jamie’s respective parents.
As is appropriate for a series about time travel, the focus of the panels was split between the past and the present, with one panel designated for Outlander and another for Blood of my Blood. In the former, Heughman, Skelton, and Rankin expressed their thankfulness for what they called “a career and personal defining moment for all of us,” giving anecdotes about how their casting helped them familiarize themselves with the highlander culture the show has become renowned for. With so much drama and tragedy behind them, the goal for season eight was “to do a really good season of Outlander and not try to do everything we’ve done,” said Heughman. They finished with a short video that commemorates Claire and Jamie’s storied history before offering a sneak peek at the final season, available below.
Meanwhile, the couples of Blood of My Blood prepared audiences for an original narrative within the Outlander universe that puts a new twist on the franchise’s hallmark time-displaced romance. Like in the original Outlander series, time travel will be a pivotal part of the series; this time, though, both of Claire’s parents (who Claire thinks died in a car accident) will be the ones who find themselves in the 18th century. “It was something we started experimenting with at the end of season four,” (male actor) said about the brainstorming process. “She had to get the gene from somewhere,” another actor added, referring to the hereditary gene that allows Claire to time travel.
In addition to a new Blood of my blood trailer, Outlander fans lucky enough to be present were also treated to an unscheduled appearance by Gharam McTavish, who plays Dougal MacKenzie in the original series. McTavish joked with the actor playing his younger counterpart, Sam Retford.
Season eight of Outlander will premiere August 8th, while Blood of My Blood releases sometime in early 2026. All seven prior seasons of Outlander are streaming now on Starz.
