Unfortunately for fans of the 90s cult classic Buffy The Vampire Slayer, it appears the show will not be getting a revival. Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar (I Know What You Did Last Summer), took to Instagram to announce that Hulu will not move forward with the project.
In a video message, Gellar said, “So I’m really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale. I wanna thank Chloe Zhao, because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloe I was reminded how much I love her, and how much she means not only to me but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes…you can still beep me,” she captioned the post with the last line of her statement.

Gellar was set to star in the series alongside new face Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Armstrong would take on the role of a new slayer with Gellar reprising her role as Buffy, likely taking on the mentor role. Gellar previously posted to Instagram about working with Armstrong, captioned. “Warrior 1 and 2 We don’t sweat … we sparkle.” Gellar had previously praised her young co-star. “From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence and talent at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room”, via mxdwn.
Armstrong spoke about her relationship with Gellar to Collider, “I can’t talk too much about Buffy, she’s just as lovely as she seems on camera. She’s such a great person. She went through Buffy. One of the first things she said to me was, ‘I will protect you. I’ll help guide you.’ It still gets me. I love Sarah. With everything, I have someone to always go to now,” via mxdwn.
According to mxdwn, Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao (Nomadland, Hamnet) was set to direct the pilot. It is still unclear as to why the project was canceled. A cult following and an Oscar-winning director behind the camera would have seemed to be a winning formula.
