According to Deadline, Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, Landman) will pen a spinoff of his series, Tulsa King, starring Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight), called NOLA King. Paramount+ has confirmed. Jackson will appear in several episodes of the Tulsa King before taking the reins of his own series as actor and executive producer.
Deadline reports that you can now see first look images of both Jackson and Tulsa King Lead, Sylvester Stallone (Rocky, Creed), in episode 309. Jackson will play Russel Washington Jr., a prison buddy of Stallone’s Dwight Marfrendi, who comes to Tulsa with ulterior motives, most notably to take Manfredi on orders from the Rentezzi crime family. Washington sees what Manfredi has created and decides to return to his hometown not only to make reconciliations but to take over. In doing so, he will put himself within the wrath of former foes and the crime boss who initially sent him to Tulsa.
Via Deadline, Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount Global, President of Showtime/MTV Entertainment, beamed when speaking of Jackson. “Samuel L. Jackson brings unparalleled presence and global appeal, making him the perfect choice to maximize the momentum of one of our biggest hits and transform it into a hit franchise, Building on the breakout success of Sylvester Stallone’s Tulsa King, audiences will now experience the full force of Jackson’s dynamic, layered performance — supercharging one of Paramount+’s flagship series.”
According to Deadline, McCarthy, inspired by Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, pitched the idea of expanding on Tulsa King to Stallone, who said, “Chris McCarthy came to me with a game-changing idea: to elevate my show beyond a mob boss series, creating a dynamic, family-driven franchise. I was immediately on board. Sam Jackson is the only choice to anchor this new adventure in NOLA and David Glasser and 101 are the perfect partner to bring it to life.” When asked about McCarthy’s pitch. NOLA King will be the first series to spawn from the Paramount+ number one hit, Tulsa King.
Deadline reports that NOLA King is hoping to begin production in February. Stalone will join Jackson as executive producer along with David C. Glasser (Yellowstone, Lion), Ron Burkle (The Giver, August: Osage County), David Hutkin (MobLand, Lioness), Bob Yari (MobLand, 1923), Michael Friedman (Yellowstone, 1883), and Keith Cox (Mayor Of Kingstown, Younger). Tulsa King showrunner Dave Erickson (The Walking Dead, Sons Of Anarchy) originally wrote the series and was set to be showrunner, but stepped down due to his workload from Tulsa King and Mayor of Kingstown, another Sheridan series. Paramount+ has begun to look for a new showrunner for NOLA King.
Via Deadline, 101 Studios and MTV Entertainment Studios will produce, with Paramount+ handling distribution. 101 Studios CEO and one of the series’ executive producers, David Glasser, said this when asked about the series. “Taylor had the brilliant idea to drop Sylvester Stallone in the middle of Tulsa, and it has been everything we have wanted and more. The success of this show has now led us to another icon. I can not wait to see what Sam brings to this world.”
