SAG-AFTRA Halloween Guidelines Announced: “We Will Not Promote Their Content Without a Fair Contract”

Last Wednesday, SAG-AFTRA revealed some new guidelines for the upcoming Halloween season. According to NBC News, the actors union cautioned thousands of its members not to dress as their favorite characters and media affected by the strike. The guidelines stated for those striking to dress as generic characters, like spiders, ghosts and zombies, over particular franchises that they are striking against.

“Let’s use our collective power to send a loud and clear message to our struck employers that we will not promote their content without a fair contract,” read the release.

The release also stated that SAG-AFTRA members abstain from posting costumes derived from the media of those affected by this ongoing strike. Nonetheless, the release said that all animated TV shows were permitted to dress as and seen as “strike-friendly.”

With that being said, costumes from colossal box office movie hits such as Barbie and Guardians of the Galaxy would cross the line. In spite of SAG-AFTRA guidelines, dressing as these characters will still be in the limelight this spooky season.

According to Google Trends, some of the most popular searches for costumes this week are Daredevil, Monster High and Princess Diaries. Some other notable mentions are searches for The Purge and Starfire. There are also some couple costumes in the mix, like Friends’ very own Ross and Rachel and Park and Recreations characters, April and Andy’s costumes, Burt Macklin and Janet Snakehole (which also doubles as April’s alter ego.)

It was announced last week that Hollywood Studios and SAG-AFTRA would postpone negotiations. Starting on July 14, SAG-AFTRA has been on strike for 100 days, which makes it a three-month strike.

An inquiry to the SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP, the motion picture trade association, did not respond right away. According to NBC News, the AMPTP represents the parent company of NBCUniversal.
