A spoiler alert and content warning for sexual abuse are recommended following a report by The Hollywood Reporter that season two of Andor has included an attempted rape scene. This is the first time the beloved family-friendly Star Wars universe has featured a scene that triggering. Although it must be said, Andor is billed as a darker, more adult version of Star Wars, which the showrunner had previously indicated would push the boundaries. It’s safe to say said boundaries have officially been pushed.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the scene features an Imperial officer forcing himself on a Rebel fugitive who is hiding out in an “undocumented” citizen farming settlement. However, things don’t end up going the way the Imperial officer had expected as Bix Caleen isn’t your average farmer. The scene reveals the officer losing his life at the hands of Caleen as she proclaims, “he tried to rape me!” Leaving no room for interpretation for what just occurred.
When pressed on the record with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Tony Gilroy (The Bourne Legacy, Duplicity) says that sexual assault is a huge component of war and even goes so far as to claim that “we are all the product of rape.” His comment has exploded on social media with users over on X taking varying stances. User @HMBohemond stating that Gilroy’s view of history completely overlooks the human institution of love, marriage, and monogamy. He even goes as far as to call Gilroy’s comments “Pseudo-intellectual drivel about war.” Other users seem to agree with Gilroy, some even going as far as to say that all acts of sex have patriarchal ‘rape’ undertones.
To say without irony “we are all the product of rape” takes an extremely unhealthy worldview of your fellow man, human reproduction, and the love between man and woman. Trying to wrap it up in pseudo-intellectual drivel about war doesn’t do it any favors. pic.twitter.com/8B7Goa9SqW

As fans seem to be divided about the inclusion of this theme in their favorite sci-fi universe. Some seeing it as an unnecessary blight on the otherwise spotless series. Others praise the scene for speaking truth to power. Either way, the scene definitely draws parallels to the real world and its current timeline. The plight of undocumented immigrants in the United States is one of the hottest topics trending. Hundreds of them reporting sexual abuse cases while being held in ICE facilities, according to PBS News. The report reveals that between 2015 and 2021, 308 sexual assault and sexual abuse complaints were filed against detention officers, contractual guards, and ICE employees (including male nurses) by migrants.
If that isn’t bad enough, the reports of sexual abuse don’t stop there. Illegal migrants have been targeted for sexual assault by their smugglers. In a 2023 report by Reuters, a DHS spokesperson is quoted as saying, “The inhumane way smugglers abuse, extort, and perpetrate violence against migrants for profit is criminal and morally reprehensible.” It gets worse. In a document available on Congress.gov titled “How porous borders fuel human trafficking in the United States,” we find the darkest side of the undocumented immigrant journey. The document claims that a study done by the Latin American branch of the Coalition Against Trafficking In Women estimates that around 60% of Latin American children who cross the border alone or with smugglers are being abused in child pornography or drug trafficking.
Whether Andor’s showrunner chose to include the scene to connect to the ever-growing Handmaid’s Tale viewer base, or to bring attention to a major social justice issue, it’s clear to see that undocumented migrants have a story to tell and a complex narrative in this world and a galaxy far far away. The first three episodes of Andor: season two are available now for streaming on Disney+
