Last weekend saw audiences bid farewell to long-running police procedural S.W.A.T., which premiered its two-hour series finale on Friday. According to Deadline, less than two days after the purported conclusion of Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson’s story, Sony Pictures Television has announced a sequel spinoff series: S.W.A.T. Exiles.
The announcement on Sunday evening was paired with the release of an Instagram video in which lead actor Shemar Moore (Criminal Minds, The Young and the Restless) thanked fans for their support and assured them that the original series’ third and most recent cancellation would not be the end of Harrelson’s adventures in the City of Angels. “We don’t stop fighting,” says Moore. “And guess what happens when you don’t stop fighting? We won.”
According to Deadline, some of Moore’s enthusiasm might be attributable to the fact that this revival of “S.W.A.T.” is markedly different from the previous two. Both Seasons 6 and 7 of the series were followed by announcements of the series’ cancellation, only for those decisions to be reversed after licensing negotiations between Sony and S.W.A.T. distributor network CBS. This time, though, Sony has chosen to sidestep negotiations entirely by green-lighting “Exiles” before selecting a distributor, something they identified as part of a strategy for “finding the right homes and partners for these new stories to reach the passionate S.W.A.T. fanbase and attract new viewers.” Whether CBS is among the networks in consideration to air the follow-up series is unknown.
Per Deadline, the summary for Exiles reads as follows: “After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”
Sony has yet to announce if any other characters from the 2017 series, which itself served as a reboot of a 1975 series with a similar premise, will return for the spinoff, via Deadline. Jason Ning (Lucifer, The Expanse) will assume the position of showrunner, replacing Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan.
Ning acknowledged the news himself in his own statement via Deadline, stating that it was “an incredible honor to carry forward the legacy of a show that fans around the world have come to love,” and that “introducing a new generation of characters into this world is a dream.”
S.W.A.T. Exiles will begin production in Los Angeles this summer.
