At a pre-Emmy voting event in Los Angeles on Friday, Ryan Murphy confirmed a few rumors and bared a couple of details surrounding season 8 of American Horror Story. What he did promise is a return to the fantasy realm closer to those of Asylum and Coven.
Murphy easily admitted this season will take place 18-months into the future (as opposed to 2032 that was reported), he decided to play a bit of Q&A about season 8 with cast members in attendance; however, they weren’t permitted to ask if they are in it. Already confirmed for next season were Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson who will both step into the director’s chair as well.
Adina Porter (Beverly Hope) kicked off by asking if there were any minorities in this season. Murphy happily replied, “I will tell you that three of our leads are indeed minorities.”
Peters question was a little off-kilter (but not surprising) when he asked if they would be wearing wigs. Murphy talked about how rough season 7 was on the actor and decided to lighten up this next one a bit. He answered the question with, “So your part this year is a comedic part, you are comedic and you play a hairstylist.”
This opened the door for Leslie Grossman (Meadow) to ask if Evan would be doing any hairstyling for Joan Collins. The answer was met with cheers from those in attendance, “Joan Collins? Yes,” Murphy stated, “She plays Evan’s grandmother.”
Rumors have also circulated that Anjelica Huston might be joining the cast. Murphy only alluded to his love of the actress and that they’re “talking.”
After last season’s politically fueled message, Murphy’s full backpack of shows in the hopper, and a $300M gig with Netflix, one wonders if AHS can keep up the momentum. The showrunner with a million ideas believes it can, “One of the great joys of my life is doing this show. I love this show so much,” he said. “This great group of actors who come together and get to know each other, and trust each other, and go to places…I just love the ability to reach out to people who I love, love, love, and say, ‘Hey would you like to come play in our sandbox?’”
Season 8 of American Horror Story begins filming in June 2018.
