Ryan-James Hatanaka Is Now A Series Regular In The New Season Of Paramount’s ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’

The second season of Paramount’s Criminal Minds: Evolution has promoted complicated yet interesting character as a series regular, ScreenRant reports. The character in question is Tyler Green, portrayed by Ryan-James Hatanaka (Nancy Drew, The Fairly Oddparents: Fairly Odder, Nurses). The show’s production for the second season was delayed many times because of the SAG-AFTRA strike back in 2023. Production has begun in January, and the main storyline for this upcoming season will focus on unveiling the identity of Gold Star, for which the BAU will have unexpected help from Hatanaka’s character.

According to ScreenRant, Green’s storyline in the first season began as him being person who was able to infiltrate the serial killer network of Elias Voit by himself since he was originally a military intelligence officer. The new season’s report shows that “BAU recruits Tyler as a consultant, utilizing his psychological operations training on their latest season-long investigation,” via ScreenRant.

Green’s mysterious past with Voit could be vital to cracking the case open. It’s still unclear what Green truly wants and it will be delved deeper in the second season. Green was also the main reason why fan-favorite character Penelope Garcia, portrayed by Kristen Vangsness (Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, Phil of the Future), decided to return to work for the BAU. Garcia and Green had a fling, which impacted fans who had hoped she would get together with co-worker Luke Alvarez, portrayed by Adam Rodriguez (C.S.I. Miami, Magic Mike XXL, Magic Mike).” Emily Prentiss, portrayed by Paget Brewster (Friends, Modern Family, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit), and her team have to continuously be cautious with Green, because he truly doesn’t seem to be who he says he is.

According to ScreenRant, the storyline of Criminal Minds: Evolution focuses on the BAU, the most elite squad of profilers that the FBI has ever had, just like in the prequel Criminal Minds. They have to face their biggest challenge yet: an Unsub who was able to create an mysterious team of serial killers with the help of a network during the 2020 pandemic. The world is now going back to normal, and the Unsub has begun the plan by setting the network back on, and the team has to find out who he is by each murder case he sets up for them to figure out.
The main cast of this show includes the same ones from season one: Brewster, Vangsness, A.J. Cook (Final Destination Two, PSI Factor,Wer), Rodriguez, Aisha Tyler (Friends, The Talk, Archer), and Joe Mantegna (The Godfather Part III, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, The Godfather).
This cast was the same as the prequel one. The main exception is that, still, to fans’ disappointment, there is no sign of return for the prequel’s actors Matthew Gray Gubler (Dollface, 68 Kill, King Knight) and Daniel Henney (The Wheel of Time, Big Hero 6, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders) in this sequel series. This show’s creator, showrunner and main writer is Erica Messer (Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, The Biggest Little Farm), who was one of the showrunners from the prequel series, via ScreenRant.
Criminal Minds: Evolution‘s first complete season is available for streaming on Paramount+.
