Deadline has learned, actor Ryan Hansen has been cast as co-lead in FOX’s single-camera comedy series Adam & Eve. He will play the titular Adam, opposite actress Odette Annable, who will play the other lead, Eve — the series being a remake of the 2012 French-Canadian show of the same name.
Hansen is best known for his portrayal as Dick Casablancas in the drama series Veronica Mars from 2004–2007 and will reprise his role in Hulu’s upcoming revival. The actor and comedian, also had a recurring role in CBS’ comedy series, 2 Broke Girls, from 2012–2017.
Actress Annable is best known for her starring role in FOX’s medical drama, House, as Dr. Jessica Adams from 2011-2012 and in the 2008 feature film, Cloverfield, as Beth McIntyre. She also just recently wrapped up her portrayal of Samantha Arias/Reign in the CW’s Supergirl.
Writer Jon Beckerman (Late Show With David Letterman and Ed) will be at the helm of the series, while original series’ producer Avanti Groupe will join the creative team alongside 20th Century Fox TV.
The 2012 French series, originally starred Pierre-François Legendre, Sophie Cadieux, and Patrice Bélanger and followed the funny, but touching portrait of a modern couple from their first meeting up until their twilight years. All respective moments were captured by the same actors, but in Benjamin Button-esque aging and de-aging special effect make-up based on which time period was shown.
All projected timelines for the Adam and Eve characters, were uniquely set-up and followed throughout the series as three parallel stories that were shown at the same time. A huge creative trick, employed by the original series’ writing team based on the concept: that older couples are no less than a projection of their younger selves. Each episode took place according to whichever episode’s established theme and would unfold differently, accordingly.
The American adaptation will be written by Beckerman and directed by Claire Scanlon, with Beckerman executive producing with Avanti Group’s Claude Meunier and Luc Wiseman. The new Adam & Eve will follow the same premise as the original; a couple at three very important stages of their relationship — young and passionate, middle-aged with kids and navigating retirement. No word has been released yet, on when the series is set to premiere.
