Take a trip back to the eighties where the longer the leg warmers, the bigger the hair, and the louder the music the better. In the first official trailer for the Apple TV+ original limited series Physical starring Rose Byrne (Mrs. America), she plays a woman with a dream: to become an aerobics instructor, via Variety.
In the eighties, many will remember the actress turned fitness trainer Jane Fonda (Grace & Frankie) and her now iconic aerobics videos. Dressed in neon unitards, sweatbands, and leg warmers, her workout videos became a national phenomenon, and soon you couldn’t walk into the mall without seeing an aerobics studio. It helped kick start the workout culture, where fitness ceased to just be about getting into shape and instead became a lifestyle.
In the Physical trailer, Byrne plays Sheila, a struggling mother and wife to a clueless, lazy husband living a tattered 1980s American dream. She has big dreams of her own, but nowhere to put them. Her one sanctuary is ballet class which she sandwiches between dropping her daughter off at school and making her husband dinner. But when the ballet studio closes, she has to find somewhere else to put her passion. Enter the dawn of the aerobic studio. Sheila becomes awakened, and strives for fame with daydreams of opening her own studo and becoming the ultimate aerobic instructor.
In addition to Byrne, the series features Rory Scovel (I Feel Pretty), Dierdre Friel (New Amsterdam), Della Saba (Zootopia), Lou Taylor Pucci (American Horror Story), Paul Sparks (Boardwalk Empire) and Ashley Liao (Fuller House).
The ten-part limited series is created, written and executive produced by Annie Weisman (The Path). Weisman, Byrne, Marty Adelstein (Last Man Standing), Becky Clements (Hanna), Alexandra Cunningham (Dirty John), John McNamara (Trumbo), and Sera Gamble (The Magicians) executive produce. Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) and Liza Johnson (Return) will direct in addition to serving as executive producers.
The first three episodes of Physical will premiere on Apple TV+ June 18. The streamer will then release an episode weekly on Fridays through August 6.
