According to Deadline, Roku is releasing a low-price streaming service that will stream different films and series from Lionsgate, Warner Bros, and others. The $2.99 service will be called Howdy.
The apparent goal of the service, per Deadline, is to provide well-liked movies without commercial interruption or increasing prices. While other streamers have seen significant price increases, Roku has insisted that its price is not simply an introductory price and instead the intended price for a long time.
As Roku CEO and founder Anthony Wood said in a conversation with Deadline, the service is “a response to the reality that many consumers are interested in a service that is ad-free and low-cost. A large part of subscription viewing is library content. We feel Howdy is in an excellent position to win over those viewers who want to unwind with some of their favorite movies and TV shows, uninterrupted. ”
As Deadline reports, the service will have titles like Party Down, Elvis, Weeds, Mad Max: Fury Road, and the Back To The Future series included in their 10,000 hours of programming at launch. The service will also include Roku Originals.
Roku has experience working with television streaming beyond its Roku Channel. Earlier this year, it acquired the streaming bundle Frdnly, per Deadline.
Last week, Deadline reports that Wood discussed streaming bundles in Roku’s second quarter earnings call: “There are lots of different locations across our UI where we can recommend content, including subscription content,” he said. “And then, bundling is a big factor in the industry. And one of the things we’re focused on is improving our capabilities to do bundling and then putting together bundles, creating bundles that include technical capabilities, product capabilities, but also deals and commercial relationships. So, we’re working on all of that and that’s improving. Certainly Frndly, we’re definitely looking at doing different kinds of bundling and adding more content, creating more packages around Frndly.”
