The red carpet keeps rolling out for 1980s movie stars where Stranger Things is concerned. It was announced on Friday that they are bringing their horror game to a whole new level by casting the man behind Freddy Krueger in Nightmare on Elm Street, Robert Englund (Nightworld). In addition, several new cast members joining season four were announced including Jamie Cambpell Bower (Sweeney Todd), Joseph Quinn (Catherine the Great), Eduardo Franco (Booksmart), Tom Wlaschiha (Game of Thrones), Nikolaj Djuricko (Legends), Mason Dye (Teen Wolf), and Sherman Augustus (Westworld) via The Hollywood Reporter.
Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984 and is considered one of the greatest horror films of all time. The movie is remembered not only for providing Johnny Depp’s (Pirates of the Caribbean) first film appearance, but its main claim to fame was because of Englund. A horror movie is only as good as its villain, and its villain Freddy Kreuger is cemented in film history as one of the genre’s scariest.
Englund is one of many icons from the eighties to now be added to the cast of Stranger Things. Other movie stars from the eighties that have been featured in previous seasons include Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket) as Dr. Brenner, Sean Astin (The Goonies) as Bob Newby and Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride) as Mayor of Hawkins. And of course one of the biggest movie stars in the eighties Winona Ryder (Heathers) stars in the series as Joyce Byers.
As the Starcourt Mall played an important role in season three, now a psychiatric hospital will play an important role in season four. Englund will portray recurring character Victor Creel, a man locked up in a psychiatric hospital after he committed a terrible murder in the 1950s. Bower will play Peter Ballard, an orderly working at the psychiatric hospital.
Quinn will be featured as recurring character Eddie Munson, a metalhead who’s in charge of the local Dungeons & Dragon’s club named The Hellfire Club. The Hollywood Reporter picked up an official statement that he will be playing a crucial role “at the terrifying epicenter of this season’s mystery.” Fans will note that earlier this month Netflix revealed in a post that episode one of season four is entitled “The Hellfire Club.”
