According to Deadline, Rob Reiner (Stand By Me, The Princess Bride) is still taking cracks at President Trump even from beyond the grave. The recently deceased actor and director’s final role on Larry David’s (Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm) The Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History Of America recently aired. Several other surprise guests have appeared on the series, including Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfled, Bee Movie) Rita Wilson (Too Much, Asteroid City), Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Smurfs) and Larry Wilmore (Insecure, The Office).
Reiner’s part was filmed just before his death. In the episode, he plays George Washington, who, while giving a speech, is incessantly nitpicked by a member of the crowd played by Larry David.
As Reiner in character outlines parts of the constitution and term limits, David says, “Well, what if there’s some asshole in office, some narcissistic prick who doesn’t follow the Constitution?” and what if “the Supreme Court is a bunch of yes men and Congress is a bunch of pussies who care more about party than country?” Per Deadline.
Dumbfounded, Reiner responds, “I can’t even fathom the existence of such men,” via Deadline.
David continues to theorize about the possible outcomes of the country and what if the presidency is used “to enrich himself and his family. He could send troops into American cities to terrorize and even kill American citizens, all to distract from the fact that he’s friends with a pedophile!” Why, he “could even cheat at golf!” via Deadline.
David eventually suggests that a president could retaliate against those who criticize him, to which another colonist, played by Jimmy Kimmel, said, “Are you suggesting that the president would take the time to challenge anyone who dares to make fun of him? As if he were a big baby?” Per Deadline.
As the crowd becomes rambunctious, Reiner attempts to calm them. “Citizens! I implore you! I beseech you! This is madness! Citizens!” He says, according to Deadline.
The sketch concludes with meta commentary from Reiner when he looks directly into the camera and says “We’re fucked.” After it ends a card honoring his memory is shown on the screen.
