Cartoon Network’s Rick and Morty is a bizarre show. Unless you find Mr. Meeseeks, giant telepathic arachnids, and purge planets normal that is. What better way to promote the upcoming third season of such an off the wall program than with an equally bizarre website?
The surreal animated science fiction comedy’s creators have yet to announce an official release date for Rick and Morty’s highly anticipated third installment, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t promoting it with their own signature style. Earlier this year the team, led by creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, took San Diego Comic Con by storm with a rough sketch/voiceover of an upcoming episode as well as one of the funniest interpretations of a ridiculous real life Georgia courtroom altercation as voiced by its titular characters. Now the team behind one of the most popular programs on Adult Swim are taking viral marketing to a whole new level with fedconnect.galacticfederation.com.
Fans will recognize the Galactic Federation as an organization which has been pursuing Rick Sanchez for his… questionable… actions for the past few seasons. Following the events of last season’s surprisingly heart wrenching finale, the Federation has incorporated Earth. The website serves as a sort of guidebook to help Rick and Morty’s Earthlings grow accustomed to their new neighbors in the galaxy. Just like the series, the website is both hysterical and utterly insane.
Features include a spinoff of BuzzFeed (referred to as BlurtFeed) that sports a highly relatable listicle for all of the eons-old entities out there as well as a page titled “Klaargworthy” that supports “interspecies couples” and boasts some adorable “cat” pictures. You can even sate your hunger with delicious intergalactic meals that look about as appetizing as they sound (Hu’Aaaig Sliders, anyone?)
The website is vintage Rick and Morty. Viewers will remember episodes based around interdimensional cable programming and highly disturbing arcade games such as “Roy: A Life Well Lived.” The series is built upon a world just as deep and nuanced as any Middle Earth or Westeros. Instead of brooding shots from atop walls or pointy-eared archers, however, Rick and Morty sets its heels in the weird and wonderful. With this newest marketing campaign, Harmon and Roiland are giving fans just the appetizer they need in anticipation for what is bound to be a barnburner of a third season.
