Review: ‘Ted’ Season 1, Episode 3 “Ejectile Dysfunction”

The third episode of Ted follows Johnny and Ted seeking to watch their first adult film. Since they’re both under 18, they have to convince Blaire to rent it for them. However, when they get back to the house, the boys eventually realize that Blaire tricked them and got them an old black and white French film.

Matty and Susan announce they will be having a romantic evening to themselves. Johnny sees this as the perfect opportunity to rent an adult film since they’ll have the house to themselves. He and Ted make a plan to get fake IDs to pull this off. The boys have a successful journey to the video store, and rent a bunch of adult films.

Matty and Susan go on their date and something is clearly off between them. They don’t seem to be on the same page, and by the end of their date, Susan is clearly noticing their differences. Back at home Johnny and Ted’s plan is nearly successful, but the tape gets stuck in the VCR.

The boys need to sneak into the school and steal a replacement from the AV room. The parents return home from their not-so-romantic evening, and Matty runs up to bed, while Susan chooses to stay on the couch and watch TV. This is when she turns the TV on and sees the adult film start to play. At first, she is mortified by what she sees, but she keeps watching.

Johnny and Ted get home to replace the VCR, they take a baseball bat to the old one to try and get the tape out, only to discover that it’s missing. The next day, the boys ravage through the house to try and find the tape. Ted finds it in Susan’s underwear drawer, and Johnny and Ted assume they are toast and will have to move out of the house.

Susan goes to Blaire to tell her about the adult film she found, and how she believes it is Matty’s, and that he’s watching them because he is displeased with her. Blaire takes the blame and says the tape is hers. Susan believes Blaire and is relieved.

In the final scene, Blaire finds Johnny and Ted in the woods and tells them they can come home after she takes the heat for them. The boys are thankful to Blaire, as Johnny learns his lesson about adult films. He makes a promise to never watch them again, only for the narrator to come in and tell us that is a lie.

This episode was albeit not as funny or witty as the first two, but it still holds true to the structure of the series. This episode was more focused on Susan, which is something that helps this episode stand out. The performance by Alanna Ubach was perfect in every way in her portrayal of Susan. Even though Blaire didn’t get a ton of screen time this episode, Giorgia Whigham continues to shine in every scene she’s in. Adding to the likeability of Blaire, who should seemingly be a fan favorite.

Ted continues to surprise audiences with each episode feeling like a traditional sitcom in a way. Each episode ends with our characters having learned a lesson after approximately 30 minutes of shenanigans. This series is capturing that perfectly, and while this particular episode wasn’t as good as the first two, it still is strong enough to stand on its own.
