The episode opens with Clarence in Switzerland, investigating the death of another scientist. The scientist had one of those helmets, and now Clarence finally gets his hands on one. Back at Jack’s house the whole gang is there, Auggie, Jin, Will, Saul, and Jack. Auggie goes upstairs to use the bathroom and finds Jack’s helmet and puts it on. Similar to when Jack puts on Jin’s helmet, she gets her head cut off. She freaks out and brings in downstairs and makes Jack explain. Auggie becomes upset when she finds out they’ve been playing this since Vera played it just before she killed herself.
They all begin trying to figure out exactly what this thing is. Saul mentions it could be possible that this game was manipulating Vera in some way and may do the same to them. He said it’s not dissimilar to Auggie’s countdown or the cosmic phenomenon, it could all be virtual reality becoming overlapped with actual reality. Auggie makes them promise to stop playing the game and Jin promises. Later that night, they’re both still playing the game over facetime, discussing the game, with Clarence listening in unbeknownst to them.
Jack and Jin enter the game together in 2 player mode, on level 2, in england. Because the Pope does not listen to Jin’s proposal, the world ends, but because Jin was correct about the 3 solar star system, they advance to level 3.
Clarence and Thomas are discussing this game, and Clarence says they’ve found out this game collects a ton of biometric data on its users. He says essentially, while you’re playing the game, someone else is playing you. Thomas suggests this game is a recruitment tool going after their best scientists. Someone at Auggie’s work is questioning why she would shut down her facility as they were on the precipice of achieving something great. Her work visa is threatened as the company is the one sponsoring her. Auggie tries to start up her machines again, but as soon as she does the countdown begins again. She shuts it down immediately.
Jin goes to Jack’s house to play the game, and they enter level 3. She goes up to the follower who makes a sassy remark about how Jin keeps failing to save her, and she says that the world will end for good if she keeps failing. Two other scientists are with the Great Khan and will demonstrate their proposal, as Jin and Jack have nothing. At first it seems like the other 2 scientists were right, but Jin proves them wrong and everyone dies again. Jin figures out the object of the game is to help the people survive, not figure out the problem. The assassin comes back and tells them they will enter level 4, as they successfully identified the object of the game.
A Man, Felix, comes out of the room where he’s monitoring Jack and Jin, and he reports to Mike Evans. Mr Evans wants them vetted for the London Summit. He is revealed to be in contact with the alien species that Ye contacted back in the 60’s. He explains how the act of reaching out to another planet was an act of fearlessness, and being fearless is something humans look up to. The unidentified creature on the other end says humans must learn to fear again and Mike says we will teach them.
Jin gets an invitation to something at her door, saying it’s level 4. Her and Jack go in and find Tatiana, Jack asks who she really is, and she says all their answers are waiting for them in level 4, so they put on the mask and begin playing. The Follower and the Assassin and there and they explain that no matter what, their planet will be destroyed. The only solution is to flee, find another home. the assassin says once they got the invitation to your planet, they knew their destination. They’ve built a fleet of 1,000 starships and are fleeing. The follower holds the hands of Jack and Jin and says I can’t wait to meet you.
Jack and Jin take their helmets off, and It’s revealed that the characters in the game are in fact real and called the San-Ti. Tatiana explains the San-Ti are on their way to earth fleeing a three-body star system and the technology for the game is their technology. Jack believes this is all a scam, but Jin believes this is the only logical explanation for all of what’s been happening. Jack leaves and Jin stays; Tatiana hands her an invitation to a summit. Jin tells her backstory about the flood that took her parents and her home.
Jack returns home and discovers Tatiana in his house, she says, all he had to do was keep playing the game and she kills him as the episode ends.
