Reporting From Comic-Con: ‘The Penguin’ And The Creation Of Oz

The Penguin, set to be released September 19th of this year, is a brand new eight-part limited series taking place a week after the events of The Batman (2022). The series stars Colin Ferrel as “Penguin” or Oz, alongside Cristin Milioti as Sophia Falcone and Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar. Each of these actors, along with Lauren LeFranc (writer), Mike Moreno (makeup artist), and Matt Reeves (executive producer), all attended a panel at Comic Con to discuss what went into the creation of this show.

One of the largest talking points of the panel was simply the creation of Oz as a character. Because Colin Ferrel clearly doesn’t resemble the character he plays, a physical suit and bust had to be created for him by Mike Moreno. Ferrel praised Moreno for his work, explaining that when he first saw the bust, he was amazed because “There was so much etched onto the face of the character”.

Rhenzy Feliz had comments on the topic as well, saying that it was jarring to see the difference between Ferrel and Penguin. “It’s kind of like a magic trick” he added, explaining Ferrel’s stark transformation from himself to Oz.

Another topic of discussion was the characters and the dynamics between them. Cristin Milioti and Ferrel’s characters reportedly have an interesting relationship.

“It’s really a power struggle,” Milioti shared about characters Sophia and Penguin. Lauren LeFranc had additional input as the show’s writer, adding that Gotham itself “is its own character”.

When September comes, audiences can expect a show with plenty of practical effects, morally gray characters and relationships, and dark, intriguing themes. View the brand new trailer below.
